PVC tarpaulin performance guide

Is PVC Tarpaulin Waterproof? Mildew, Oil & Chemical Resistance Guide

Choose waterproof PVC tarpaulin for the water, humidity and liquids your project will face.

Yes. Intact PVC-coated fabric can be waterproof at its stated test pressure and time. A finished tarp also needs sound welds or sealed seams, protected edges and undamaged attachment points. Mildew-resistant grades are available. For oil and chemical contact, match the formulation to the exact liquid, concentration, temperature, contact time and exposure type.

Three resistance questions, three clear answers

1

Waterproof?

Yes, within the stated test conditions. For the complete cover, check seams, holes, damage, drainage, pressure and test time.

2

Mildew resistant?

Yes, with a suitable formulation. Clean the surface and dry the tarp before storage; dirt and trapped moisture can still support growth.

3

Oil or chemical resistant?

Available for specific exposures. Brief splashes, repeated contact and full immersion require different checks.

01 / Waterproofing

Is PVC tarpaulin waterproof?

An intact PVC coating is designed to stop liquid water through the fabric. Its verified limit is the stated hydrostatic pressure and test time. The polyester base carries the load, while the PVC layer closes the spaces between the yarns.

A finished cover is a larger system. Rain can enter through an open eyelet, an unsealed stitch line, a cut or a poor weld. Correct overlaps, sound seams and drainage help the complete cover keep water out.

Both coated and laminated PVC tarpaulin can provide a waterproof surface. Compare the full construction and test result when selecting a grade.

Six parts that affect a finished tarp

PartWhat mattersWhat to check
Coated fabricCoating continuity, adhesion and freedom from pinholesWater-pressure test on the exact grade
Welded overlapA continuous, well-bonded weldWeld quality and leakage after handling
Sewn seamNeedle holes create possible water pathsA suitable sealing method where a watertight seam is needed
Hems and eyeletsReinforcement controls stress; an eyelet remains an openingPlacement, overlaps and runoff direction
Wear and repairsScuffs, cuts, folds and patch edgesSurface condition and compatible repair material
Cover designSupport and slope reduce water pocketsDrainage, tension and the expected load

For material testing, ISO 1420 measures resistance at a specified water pressure and duration. It does not certify every finished cover made from that fabric.

02 / Mildew control

Is PVC tarpaulin resistant to mold and mildew?

Mildew-resistant PVC formulations are available for damp outdoor use. The result depends on the coating recipe, surface finish, test method and care. A suitable anti-fungal treatment can reduce growth under the stated test conditions, while an easy-clean surface helps reduce deposits.

Mildew can still grow on dust, leaves and other organic dirt left on a wet surface. Some coating ingredients can also be affected by fungi. A waterproof surface does not prevent condensation under a cover or moisture trapped inside a folded tarp.

What to ask the supplier

  • Is an anti-mildew option available for this grade?
  • Which test and method were used?
  • What rating was recorded, and after how long?
  • Was the sample tested before or after weathering?

ASTM G21 and ISO 846 are examples of methods used to assess fungal effects. A report should identify the tested material.

Four simple steps for humid conditions

  1. 1DrainSupport the cover so water can run off.
  2. 2CleanRemove dirt, leaves and spills promptly.
  3. 3DryLet both sides dry before folding.
  4. 4StoreChoose a clean, dry storage area.

For exposed outdoor installations, also compare UV, heat, cold and outdoor service life.

03 / Oil, chemicals & dirt

How resistant is PVC tarpaulin to oil and chemicals?

Selected PVC-coated fabrics can be made for specific oil and chemical contact. To choose one, identify the liquid, its concentration, the contact temperature, the contact time and whether the fabric faces splashes or immersion.

Industrial dirt is also a cleaning and wear issue. Dust can be removed from a suitable smooth finish, but trapped grit may rub the coating. Oil stains may need a different cleaner. A clean-looking surface alone does not prove that strength or coating adhesion is unchanged.

ExposurePractical material choiceConfirm before ordering
Rain and clean waterWaterproof PVC fabric with suitable cover constructionHydrostatic result, welds, drainage and handling
Humid air and dirty surfacesAnti-mildew option and an easy-clean finishFungal test, cleaning method and dry-storage plan
Grease or oil splashesA grade checked for the named oil and short contactOil type, temperature, spill duration and cleaner
Repeated chemical contactA formulation tested with the actual chemical mixtureConcentration, contact cycle and retained properties
Fuel, solvents or immersionA purpose-designed containment material and seam systemFull compatibility assessment for the real exposure

This is a selection table, not a universal chemical compatibility rating. Flexible PVC fabric contains plasticizers and other ingredients, so ratings for rigid PVC pipe are not a substitute for fabric data.

Brief splash

A small spill that is removed quickly. Record the liquid and the time before cleaning.

Repeated contact

The liquid reaches the same area often. Include cleaning cycles, flexing and heat in the assessment.

Immersion

The fabric remains in the liquid. Check the coating, reinforcement, welds and long-contact performance together.

Which test data should buyers request?

Ask for a result for the exact grade, with the test conditions shown. A standard name explains the method; the result tells you how the sample performed.

RequirementExample methodUseful report details
Waterproof fabricISO 1420; applicable hydrostatic test in ASTM D751Grade, pressure or water-column height, duration, conditioning and pass/fail criterion
Mildew resistanceASTM G21 or the agreed ISO 846 methodFormulation, method, exposure time, growth rating and any prior aging
Oil / chemical contactISO 6450 for coated fabricsActual liquid, concentration, temperature, duration, one-sided contact or full immersion, and changes in properties
Finished seamsAgreed leak and seam-strength checksWelding or sealing process, seam layout, pressure and checks after handling

After liquid exposure, useful checks may include swelling, tackiness, cracking, mass change, tensile strength, tear strength and coating adhesion. Choose the acceptance limits before comparing suppliers.

The standards above are reference methods. Request the available report and test scope for the Uni-Tarp grade you are considering.

How to clean oil, dirt and mildew from PVC tarpaulin

  1. Remove loose dirt first. Use a soft brush or cloth to limit abrasion.
  2. Choose an approved cleaner. Follow the fabric supplier’s instructions and stated dilution. Try a small area first.
  3. Clean gently and rinse. Use cold or lukewarm water as directed.
  4. Dry both sides. Inspect seams, folds and worn areas before storage.

For oil or chemical spills, use a cleaning method suited to both the liquid and the coating. Solvents, bleach, abrasive tools, steam and pressure washers can affect some PVC finishes; use them only when the product instructions allow them.

Four buying mistakes to avoid

1. Checking only the fabric

Also review the seams, holes, drainage and repairs of the finished cover.

2. Treating mildew resistance as zero care

Pair a suitable formula with cleaning and dry storage.

3. Calling every liquid “oil”

Give the product name and exposure conditions so the right compatibility check can be made.

4. Choosing resistance by GSM alone

Weight helps describe the fabric. The coating recipe, finish and complete construction determine its resistance.

Waterproof PVC tarpaulin: frequently asked questions

Is PVC tarpaulin fully waterproof, and what affects its waterproof performance?

An intact, continuous PVC coating forms a waterproof barrier. The finished tarp also depends on welds or sealed seams, openings, surface damage, water pressure and drainage. Ask for the exact grade’s hydrostatic result and check the finished construction.

Is PVC tarpaulin resistant to mold and mildew?

Anti-mildew formulations are available. A tested grade can resist fungal growth under its stated test conditions, but dirt and trapped moisture can still support surface growth. Clean the material and dry it before folding or storage.

How resistant is PVC tarpaulin to oil, chemicals and industrial dirt?

Selected grades can be matched to specific oils and chemicals. Performance depends on the coating recipe, liquid, concentration, temperature and contact time. Dirt also affects cleaning and abrasion. For repeated contact or immersion, assess the exact fabric and seams.

Does a higher GSM make PVC tarpaulin more waterproof?

GSM is the total fabric weight. Coating quality, continuity, adhesion and seam construction are more useful checks for waterproof performance. Compare the water-pressure result as well as the weight.

Can I use ordinary PVC tarpaulin for a fuel tank or chemical liner?

Choose a purpose-designed material and finished system for that liquid. A cover fabric’s rain resistance does not establish fuel or chemical containment suitability. Supply the liquid and exposure details for a compatibility assessment.

What information should I send with a resistance inquiry?

Send the use, liquid name and concentration, contact temperature and time, splash or immersion conditions, required dimensions and quantity. Add any required test method or performance target.
