What Is PVC Tarpaulin?
PVC tarpaulin is a heavy-duty waterproof material made from a high-strength polyester base fabric coated with polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The polyester fabric provides tensile and tear strength, while the PVC coating creates a waterproof, weather-resistant, and easy-to-clean surface.
PVC tarpaulin is commonly used for truck covers, industrial covers, construction protection, tents, outdoor storage, and other applications that require durable material for repeated or long-term use.
Compared with lightweight PE tarpaulin, PVC tarpaulin is generally better suited to demanding applications where higher strength, durability, weldability, and repeated use are important.
For a detailed material comparison, see our PVC vs PE vs Canvas Tarpaulin Guide.
What Is PVC Coated Polyester Fabric?
PVC coated polyester fabric is a composite material made by applying PVC coating to a woven polyester base fabric.
The two materials perform different functions:
Polyester Base Fabric
Provides the structural strength of the tarpaulin, including tensile strength, tear resistance, and dimensional stability.
PVC Coating
Creates a waterproof and weather-resistant outer layer while providing abrasion resistance, flexibility, cleanability, and heat-welding capability.
Together, the polyester reinforcement and PVC coating create a strong, flexible, waterproof, and weldable material suitable for heavy-duty tarpaulin applications.
Depending on the intended use, PVC coated polyester fabric can also be customized with UV resistance, anti-mildew treatment, flame-retardant properties, different surface finishes, colors, GSM weights, and yarn specifications.
PVC Tarpaulin Material Structure
A typical PVC tarpaulin consists of several functional layers designed to work together.
Optional Surface Treatment
A lacquer or other surface treatment can be applied to improve dirt resistance, surface appearance, cleaning performance, UV resistance, or other application-specific properties.
PVC Coating
The upper PVC layer provides the primary waterproof and weather-resistant surface. It also protects the internal polyester fabric from moisture, dirt, abrasion, and environmental exposure.
High-Strength Polyester Base Fabric
The woven polyester reinforcement forms the structural core of the tarpaulin. Its yarn specification and fabric construction have a major influence on tensile strength, tear strength, dimensional stability, and overall durability.
PVC Coating
The lower PVC layer encapsulates and protects the polyester reinforcement while creating a durable surface that can be welded, fabricated, and customized for different applications.
The exact construction, coating weight, yarn specification, surface treatment, and total GSM can be adjusted according to the required application.
Why Is Polyester Used as the Base Fabric?
Polyester is widely used as the reinforcing base fabric in PVC tarpaulin because it provides a strong combination of tensile strength, tear resistance, dimensional stability, flexibility, and durability.
The woven polyester structure carries most of the mechanical load, while the surrounding PVC coating provides waterproofing and environmental protection.
For heavy-duty applications, the performance of a PVC tarpaulin therefore depends not only on its total GSM, but also on factors such as polyester yarn denier, yarn density, weave construction, PVC coating quality, and coating adhesion.
This is why two PVC tarpaulins with the same GSM may still have different strength and durability characteristics.
